[MHS: Medical Human Story-Episode 76] Part IV: Recovery and the Remaining Tale – Stepping Into the World with a New Map
[MHS: Medical Human Story]-Episode 76
Prologue & Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 & Epilogue
The night before her discharge procedures, outside the
window of the university hospital room on the 7th floor, the deep autumn night
sky settled down desolately. Following close and intensive discussions by a
multidisciplinary care team combining Thoracic Surgery, Urology, and Radiology,
the wisest and safest path was chosen for Ji-woo, avoiding a reckless and
high-risk immediate major surgery.
Fortunately, the kidney located within the thoracic cavity
due to somatic embryological malformation was performing its original renal
function perfectly at over 95 percent capacity. Furthermore, the intralobar
pulmonary sequestration tissue—although supplied with abnormal blood flow
directly from the aorta—showed no evidence of ischemic injury or infection in
the surrounding alveolar tissue.
Rather than breaking the balance of life with a hasty
scalpel, the medical team decided to preserve this precarious peace through
regular CT angiography and pulmonary function follow-up observations. It was
the most noble form of resection modern medicine could attain, coupled with a
warm insight that cared for the entirety of the patient's remaining life.

[Insert Figure]
Early in the morning, the warm autumn sunlight piercing
through the hospital window glass landed softly like fine dust on the white
bedsheet. Ji-woo gazed blankly at her smartphone screen. On the screen was the
mysterious 3D volumetric CT scan that Professor Elias Lee had personally shown
her on the reading room monitor a few days earlier.
The fact that a kidney resided deep inside the upper part
of her chest—right where peace should dwell—and that red blood vessels
extending from the aorta, the grand lifeline of the human body, were vibrating
minutely to the rhythm of her heart. Beyond fear, it was a bizarre yet
brilliant cross-section of a universe harbored exclusively by herself in this
world.
The door opened quietly, and Professor Elias entered,
fluttering the hem of his white coat. In his hands were two paper cups
radiating warm heat.
“Ji-woo, did you sleep well?”
At Elias’s affectionate and low voice, Ji-woo slowly raised
her head. The panicked expression and tear-stained face she wore when wheeled
into the emergency room a few days ago were nowhere to be found. Instead, her
eyes glowed with a clear and firm gaze possessed only by someone who had fully
embraced the secrets of her own flesh and finally reconciled with the world.
“Professor… to be honest, at first, my body felt like some
kind of wrongly constructed monster. I felt resentful and terrified that I
wasn’t born as normal as everyone else.”
Ji-woo looked out the window at the fallen leaves in the
hospital garden, smiling desolately yet calmly.
“But when I think about it, it’s truly amazing. Over the
past 22 years, my body has never betrayed me, even amidst that dangerous and
complex labyrinth. When I stayed up all night at the library and gripped the
handlebars of the chicken delivery scooter tight against the cold dawn wind… my
heart was stubbornly circulating blood through these abnormal vessels and
keeping me alive all along.”
Elias set down his coffee cup and stopped beside Ji-woo’s bed.
Nodding deeply, he looked at her with eyes moistened by deep emotion.
“That’s right, Ji-woo. No matter how brilliant medical
technology and advanced equipment may be, a doctor does not merely fix diseased
organs. Ultimately, the art of healing is a long journey helping a patient
fully reconcile with their own body and affirm the mystery of life nested
within it. Ji-woo’s body is not broken. You were born holding deep within you a
vast, ‘special universe’ that others could never understand even if they lived
a lifetime. Now that you know the secrets and rules of that universe, you can
live your life cherishing yourself more than anyone else.”
[Medical Insight Box: Humanistic Healthcare & Patient Resilience]
Finishing all discharge procedures, the automatic doors of
the hospital lobby slid open. The crisp, blue autumn sky of the outside world
poured down.
Her mother tightly gripped the back of Ji-woo’s hand with dry hands, taking careful steps one by one to match her daughter’s pace. The two footsteps no longer trembled with anxiety and fear. Deep within their chests, carrying their own heavy yet beautiful map of life, they walked out boldly and resiliently onto the grand road of the world.
On the 5th floor of the university hospital main building,
beside the window of the radiology research office filled only with quiet
breaths.
Elias wrapped both hands around a steaming mug, silently
gazing at the affectionate backs of Ji-woo and her mother moving away in front
of the hospital garden. Watching their clothing flutter in the sunlight, he
quietly reflected once more on the medical vocation he had held deep in his
heart for decades since donning his white doctor's coat.
Over the past years as a doctor, he had read tens of
thousands of CTs, MRIs, and PET scans. Amidst the brilliant contrasts of black
and white, he had encountered countless cancer cells, malformations, ruptured
vessels, and cross-sections of despair. Yet every time he opened a new monitor
window, the truth he realized was that inside those cold digital images lay not
merely anatomical data or patterns of disease.
It was a person’s tenacious history, the tearful weight of
life, and the brilliant confession of a life miraculously surviving.
[Medical Insight Box: Epilogue]
No matter how rapidly advanced medical artificial
intelligence (AI) and deep learning algorithms progress to pinpoint minute
lesions and abnormal findings in 0.1 seconds, the task of reading the lonely
fear and warmth of life held within that image remains forever a doctor’s
exclusive domain and sacred territory that machines can never replace.
Medical Human Story
Every Image Tells a Story. Every Patient Changes a Life.
Suddenly, the smartphone screen resting quietly on the
research desk emitted a bluish-white light, brightening brilliantly.
Simultaneously, a short and sharp alert sounded. Another emergency patient’s
brain MRI file and an urgent message transmitted in real-time from an emergency
center resident filled the screen.
“Professor, this is an emergency patient transferred
following a traffic accident. There is a suspected micro-hemorrhage near the
brainstem, and I am requesting a reading.”
What kind of astonishing life narrative and tears would be
waiting for him behind that cold digital reading window this time?
With a deep breath, Elias set down his mug, picked up the
white coat and coat draped over his chair. His footsteps began to move
vigorously once more toward the brilliant and fierce arena of the emergency
frontline where life and death intersect.
